Ghosts - What will it bring to the Competitive Scene?
So with Ghosts a few days away there still seems to be some confusion about how the latest game in the franchise will affect or be received by the Pro Gaming circuit.
Firstly, after game modes were released, the structure of which modes will be used, seems a little unclear. Some information floating around Twitter seems to suggest Domination, SnD and Blitz, however, this is by no means confirmed by anyone in the know!
Secondly, and of much discussion between Benson and TEC Silverback on Twitter this morning, was the exclusion of CoD Caster from Ghosts. Before anyone shoots me down, I know that this has yet to be confirmed, and could still be written into the game, but as of yet, it certainly has not been advertised by either Activision or IW.
So, all in all a pretty cloudy picture at the moment! I'll be speaking to a variety of people from within Esports over the next few days to get their opinion on these factors, so check back soon to see what everyone thinks of Ghosts and Pro Gaming!

News From Play Expo - AC4 on PS4, Nintendo Line Up and Dark Souls 2

So with Play Expo only a week away, there has been some major announcements on whats being shown at the event.

I personally think that this will end up being one of the most popular areas at the show, and am really looking forward to getting a look myself.
Second up, and another big hitter in the form of Nintendo, have announced their game line up to be on display in Manchester.
For the Wii U there will be:
Super Mario 3D World
Sonic Lost World
For the 3DS:
Zelda: Link Between Worlds
Sonic Lost World
Pokémon X
Pokémon Y
With other titles maybe also on show, it'll be an interesting look for Nintendo fans in attendance.
Lastly Namco-Bandai have announced that they will be exhibiting at Play Expo and that they will be showing their eagerly anticipated RPG-er Dark Souls 2, a full 5 months before its release date.
Seems like there will be a lot of interesting developments to keep every type of gamer busy at the event!

Play Expo @ Manchester - My first Gaming Show!
Once again thanks for all the views of the last post - all of them greatly appreciated guys.
This time around I'm going to be previewing my first visit to a Gaming Expo/Show - Play Expo at Event City Manchester on the 12th-13th of October.
The event incorporates lots of different aspects of the gaming world in one event, and they are broken down into 4 areas:
They will also be hosting the UK heats of the World Cosplay Summit with a chance for a pair of entrants to win an expenses paid trip to Japan for the finals!
The re.play area will will feature hundreds of arcade machines, pinballs, consoles and computers and is set to be the biggest retro display in Europe. New for 2013 is the introduction of the PC LAN zone featuring classic networked games from the FPS, Realtime Strategy and Driving genres.
Pro.play will stage tournaments on FIFA, Mario Kart, Halo and Minecraft plus many more and they will be hosting the UK qualifier for the Super Street Fighter 4 Capcom Cup with a trip to the USA for the winner!
For me personally it will be a new experience, getting to meet gaming industry people first hand and seeing face to face what experiences are to be had at events such as this.
I'm very keen to get my hands on Assassin's Creed 4 and also seeing any other new releases on show.
I'll also be keen to meet up with any other gamers attending the event, and maybe put faces to names!
I will be hopefully getting loads of info to put into an upcoming blog post, and give my views on all aspects of the event.

Pro Gaming Interview Issue 2 - Scott Brass aka Tricked Mak

Hi Guys! Firstly a MASSIVE thanks to Infinitio Buzzy (@Infinitio_Buzz) for my amazing new logo! I am delighted with it and it will adorn all my future blogs!
Thanks again to everyone who read and posted about issue 1's interview with Benson, it got much more feedback than I could have hoped for!
Second up for the Grumpy Gamer interview experience is Pro Gamer Tricked Mak aka Scott Brass. Some will know Scott from his time with Curse, and he recently joined the Tricked Esports squad to try to enhance their prospects!
So without further ado....here's the interview:
1 - Grumpy Gamer (GG) What lead you into Pro Gaming?
Tricked Mak (TM) - I think like most pro gamers, you almost fall into it. I don't really know anyone who decided that they were going to be a pro at something that they didn't already enjoy and were good at. I think its like any hobby, if you at good enough at something, then you can normally make something out of it.
2 - GG - What do you feel sets a Pro player apart from a public player?
TM - I don't want to say that its that Pro Players care more, but in a sense its true. I think that if you know that you are good enough to be winning and succeeding at things, then it drives you on and gives you ambition.
3 - GG - What are the Pros and Cons of attending so many events?
TM -Well the Pro’s are the obviously ones, you get to compete at something you are passionate about, you get to spend time with people that you spend a lot of your time talking too, and best of all you get the shot at winning something. The cons depend on the individual, for me, its time away from my friends and girlfriend, and means that I need time off work, which isn't always easy.
4 - GG - Whats your feelings on organisations and players changing teams a lot?
TM - Honestly I don't like to change organisations, that being said sometimes its inevitable, like when an organisation is expecting a standard from you guys and you don't meet it, I understand when that type of thing happens. I don't tend to want to leave organisations that I get along with well and that are supportive of me.
5 - GG - How do you feel pro players view their fans/other public players?
TM - Most of them appreciate their fans and wouldn't be in the position they were without the support and following that they have, for example Optic. Most of the amateur gamers with only a few followers obviously don't really see the impact they have with certain things they say.
6 - GG - What are your thoughts on Trash Talking in matches?
TM - Trash talking is something that adds edge to the game, and cant certainly have an impact on a teams performance, either for the better or worse. If you do something that it worth shouting about and you let the other team know about it, it can give you a boost.
7 - GG - Where do you see eSports and CoD in particular going in the future?
TM - Honestly the past 18 months I think call of duty as a e-sport has grown more in that time, than its entire history combined, and I don't think its showing any signs of slowing down. I'm not sure how many more years I have playing the game but hopefully in that time I get to see if reach out to tones more people.
Thanks once again to Scott for his time in answering my questions and all the best in your time at Tricked!

Pro Gaming Interview Issue 1 - Ben 'Benson' Bowe
This is the first in hopefully a series of interviews with people connected with the Pro gaming circuit. The questions are fairly basic, and are aimed at getting a feel for what the interviewee thinks about eSports in general.
So first up, Ben 'Benson' Bowe, widely recognised commentator, live streamer and CoD personality, kindly answered some questions for me, and the results are below.........
Grumpy Gamer (GG) - What lead you into competitive gaming, and then onto the Pro scene?
Benson (B) - I used to play football at a high level, then broke my ankle badly enough I could never play again. From there, gaming grabbed me! With my competitive nature, the transition into competitive gaming was simple. I just want to be the best at everything I do in every aspect of my life.
GG - What do you feel sets a Pro player apart from an amateur/Public player?
B - The difference is massive. It's the equivalent to asking what
separates an Olympian from a Sunday local meet athlete. The way the
players think / communicate and simply know the game are all on a
completely different level.
GG - What are the Pros and Cons of constantly moving from event to event?

GG - What are the Pros and Cons of constantly moving from event to event?
B - A question I get asked very very frequently. In terms of the pros,
they are obvious. Following something I love around the globe. Seeing
making places, sights and people. In terms of the cons, the only real
one I have is keeping my sleep schedule as normal as possible. A month
ago i went from LA - Germany - London - LA! Trying to keep that as
normal as possible was difficult, but not impossible. At the end of the
day, I love what I do and can't wait for the future, so realistically in
my eyes there are no cons.
GG - From the outside, it seems that players and teams/organisations are
constantly changing line ups. Do you see this as correct and what are
your views on this?
B - Sadly I do. The example I give whenever talking about this is - OpTic
Gaming, MW3 season, 0 roster changes, won every event. They were the
most dominant team on the game. Same can be said with Impact at the
start of the Black Ops 2 season. 4 events back to back, 0 roster
changes. Team chemistry is something I often say is a key part of a
winning formula.
GG - How do Pro players/people involved in Pro gaming generally view the 'fans' and other amateur players?
B - I have never met a player who doesn't love his fans. Without the fans,
opportunities would not exist. You only have to go to a major
championship to see how the players love their fan interaction. Often
signing autographs and taking pictures instead of resting and preparing
for their next games!!
GG - Trash talking in games recently became a hot topic. What are your views
on this and do you think it has a negative impact on eSports image in
the world outside gaming?
B - For me this is a simple topic. There are two types of "trash talk" in my
eyes. One is a motivational tool you see in EVERY SINGLE SPORT
worldwide. The other needs to be banned. Their is a significant
difference between me screaming "Let's GO" and me saying "your ****" at
an opponent mid game. Anything DIRECTLY aimed at an opponent needs to be
stomped out of the game. It has a massively negative effect on the
growth of the game within eSports. I don't think people realise how much
it affects it, but after speaking to the developers about this exact
topic, I can tell you, it needs to stop.
GG - Where do you see eSports and competitive CoD in particular going in the short to mid term future?
B - The only way is forward!! People are worrying about several things -
New consoles, New games and the life spam of the game itself. All valid
worries, but this last year has been the BOOM of COD. The next couple of
years will be the "cash cow" After that we will see the future of COD.
For now though, it's looking very very promising from everything I can
see!
So there you have it! Again BIG thanks to Ben for the answers to my questions. Below are some of his links, so please visit him and show him your love.......well not literally obviously!

Gaming/Real Life Split?
Well guys, I've had a well earned holiday, albeit 10 days camping, but I seriously enjoyed the break and the great weather.
So we come onto the subject of this Blog......
Real Life/Gaming split
To be fair, being an older gamer with a family, I probably have more time away from gaming than some of you younger types!
I rarely get to game during the day, but to be fair, its not something that interests me. Most of my gaming friends are online in the evenings, and this suits me fine.
However, it does interest me how much time people spend on their gaming, and how much it is split with their real life interests. If we start right at the top end, it amazes me just how little spare time the Pro Gamers seem to get at times, simply hopping from one event to the next, and in some cases, one country to the next. I know that they are mostly young guys, and that they sometimes get handsome rewards for this, and as such it is almost their accepted routine.
I often wonder what these guys do to unwind after events such as this, as often gaming is OUR way of unwinding after a day of work.
Obviously for many of us mere mortal gamers, that is not something we have to worry about, and as such gaming will inevitably be simply a relaxation and a past time to keep us entertained. However, when, for example, a CoD title is released, and you see people hitting top prestige really quickly, all of us think 1 of 2 things; Booster/Hacker or THEY HAVE NO LIFE!
It is baffling to me that people spend SO much time a) on one single game, or b) on their console without doing other things.
Don't get me wrong I LOVE my gaming, but without outside interests, there simply cannot be any sort of perspective in your gaming. You start to game for the sake of gaming, NOT because you enjoy it, and for me thats the big issue. Gaming is FUN, and if you start to play games just for the sake of it, then surely you've lost the buzz.
My advice....go camping (in a real tent, not in a corner on Black Ops 2), have some beers, go to the beach, enjoy the sun.......I think you'll find you'll come back a happier, and more inclined to enjoy your gaming again!

So..CoD:Ghosts.....whats this all about eh!?
Firstly, can I thank all the people who took the time to read my first blog, and all those who promoted it on Twitter, I really appreciate it!
I also have a new Twitter account just for the blog which is - @Old_GrumpyGamer
So onto my second subject for discussion, and given the hype, I simply couldn't ignore this weeks MP reveal for CoD Ghosts.
To be fair, this is a personal subject for me, as I have to admit to being a bit of a Infinity Ward fanboy (well, fan-oldtimer!). They have, in my humble opinion, always produced the more rounded game in terms of experience, both cinemtaic/visual and on story line. Yeah OK, so maybe the multiplayer sometimes has issues that we might not all agree on, but lets be fair, which multiplayer doesn't?
My first view of Ghosts, from the 14th August live reveal, was that it seemed to be good ol' IW fayre, with most of the features that we experienced before being employed again.
I personally prefer the near future/current day weapons more than some of the slightly more futuristic weaponary in BO2 and so, all that seems to be to my liking too.
I'm not sure about that bloody dog walking round after me all the time, imagine the amount of dog crap littering the place! Hope they've got pooper scoopers as a side arm!
All in all the small amount of information and videos that we've seen, appear to show that we could be in for our usual experience, so on that score all well and good. However, I've heard that some of the Esports community are concerned that nothing was mentioned about the support that the game will offer their side of the game - I too was surprised this wasn't mentioned, especially given the fanfare that BO2 gave in its reveals especially with CoD Casting and other competitive elements.
They've also removed Death Streaks, and I know that you'll be all HURRAH-ing at that...but how can I get kills now?! :(
My last point is one that bloody narks me something proper! How bad is it that I've already heard people on forums and on Twitter whinging and whining that they'll buy it, but fully expect to hate the game after a short time!
Now don't get me wrong, I can get angry at times with CoD games, but the way some people get wound up by it, and then flatly refuse to play the game online after about 3 months of having the game is plainly ridiculous! No game is EVER going to be perfect, so please young 'uns, just accept that, play the game to have fun, and accept that you'll only have 12 months to wait before you have another one to complain about!
So....thats my second blog done! Spread the word people - and you if you follow me on twitter, you see that I have an AMAZING giveaway going one!!
